The inside of my 740's expansion tank has been coated in grey limescale-like stuff (as you might find inside a kettle) since I've had the car, which makes it difficult (but not impossible) to check the coolant level. I imagine that this could be removed with kettle de-scaler, but I haven't got round to it yet ;) To remove oily residues and traces of old coolant from the expansion tanks of a couple of other cars in the past, I removed the tanks, blocked up the hose stubs, etc. with cloth and swilled a mix of very hot water and washing up liquid around inside them, which works a treat. It works with washer bottles too :)
