Coolant reservatory dirty.

MessageAuthor

The coolant reservatory from my 760 is completly dirty inside. I took of the reservatory and I am trying to clean. It seams that there is oil in the internal side of the reservatory. I was repalcing the cooland but I tought to clean the reservatory. Does anybody knows who can I clean it? "maybe the proper name is expansion tank"? Thanks.

RE: Coolant reservatory dirty.

The inside of my 740's expansion tank has been coated in grey limescale-like stuff (as you might find inside a kettle) since I've had the car, which makes it difficult (but not impossible) to check the coolant level. I imagine that this could be removed with kettle de-scaler, but I haven't got round to it yet ;) To remove oily residues and traces of old coolant from the expansion tanks of a couple of other cars in the past, I removed the tanks, blocked up the hose stubs, etc. with cloth and swilled a mix of very hot water and washing up liquid around inside them, which works a treat. It works with washer bottles too :)

If that was my reservoir I'd first of all want to find out what is causing it to be so oily in the first place as my coolant could be getting contaminated by my oil. Maybe I'd "reserve" my favourite chair in my "conservatory" and head off there to have a think about the possibility of needing a new head gasket at some point... ;) Pete
